The Artist Statement
“Every artwork should end with a question and the answer to that question becomes the next work you create, and so on and so forth…”
The Reflective Artist Statement is a chance for you to both explain your artwork and demonstrate your creative thinking process, to showcase what you have learned and how you have learned it.
Write in complete sentences and organize your writing into paragraphs.
Use the prompts below to help you formulate your writing.
Introduction
What were you asked to do or what task or challenge did you set yourself?
What is the title of the piece of work? Why did you choose this title for your piece?
PURPOSE/INTENTION- What was your intention in making this work? What ideas did you aim to express/show?
Theme / Mood
Is your work in any way expressive? (Exploring experiences, feelings, emotions or memories) – If so what does it express?
Does your work have a mood or atmosphere? (Is it mysterious? celebratory? commemorative? disturbing? playful? contemplative or inquisitive?) – If so how have you visually communicated this?
What is the theme, ‘subject’ or issue being dealt with in your work?
Does your work ‘link with’ any social, cultural, moral, personal, ethical or political issues?
Form / Process
Name the tools and the materials and techniques you used and describe what you did with them.
Summarize the process of making your work.
Describe how your ideas changed as you developed your work. What changed and why?
Composition and Visual Communication: How does your use of (imagery, color, layout of positive and negative space, focal point, texture, repetition, contrast etc.) support your purpose and intention of this work?
Context
Are there any links between this current project and your previous work? (For example in the use of media, in the subject matter, in the artists/or artworks you have made reference to?)
What have you learned from looking at other artists work that has been helpful in the development of your own work?
Note anything you found easy. Note anything you found challenging. Note how you succeeded in meeting/problem-solving these challenges.
What would you improve/change if you had the opportunity to do this again?
What new ideas do you have after making this piece?
