President's Day Weekend Assignment 2/16-2/19
Choice Assignment
Option 1: Room in 1-point perspective
Art supplies for this assignment:
-sketchbook
-eraser
-mechanical pencil or sharp pencil for drawing out your lines
-ruler (preferably a clear ruler)
-pencil for shading/values
Task: Aim to focus for 1 hour for this assignment. This assignment will have you practicing drawing in 1 point linear perspective (1 vanishing point) using a room in your house as a loose inspiration. I say loose because you have the creative power to add something that isn't actually there or not include what is actually there in your drawing.
I recommend watching 1 of the 2 videos below (1 video is linked as it cannot be embedded) just to help you begin and make sure you have your horizon line, vanishing point and back wall figured out.
Use a mechanical pencil or a sharp pencil to draw all your main lines. You should have an eraser and ruler to help you complete this drawing every step of the way.

Option 2: Still life of 1-3 objects-observational drawing and practicing values/mark-making
Images above from Wayne Thiebaud's sketchbook
Art supplies for this assignment:
-sketchbook -eraser -drawing pencil -shading pencil (4B) OR fine tip pen OR ballpoint pen (if you plan to do hatching/cross hatching) Your task: Aim to focus for 1 hour for this assignment. You will set up a still life of 1-3 objects on a table with a strong light source, like a desk lamp or using natural light from a window to light up one side (left or right side) of your objects. The photo to the right is a great example, as the light source is coming from the right side and the shadow of the objects is falling to the left side. You should see shadows created with your light source on the surface your objects are sitting on. Remember to begin by drawing with pencil and map out your horizon line (table surface boundary) as well as the shapes of your object(s) on the table. You will use your pencil until you are ready to add in the values, and remember you can shade and crosshatch in pencil as well. |
I recommend watching 1 of the tutorial videos embedded below to review crosshatching before you begin your shading stage.
