Unit 2 Theme option:
The GAZE
THE GAZE
The concept of gaze (often also called the gaze or, in French, le regard), in analyzing visual culture, is one that deals with how an audience views the people presented. The concept of the gaze became popular with the rise of Postmodern philosophy and social theory and was first discussed by 1960’s French Intellectuals, namely Michael Foucalt's description of the medical gaze and Jacque Lacan's analysis of the gaze's role in the mirror stage development of the human psyche. This concept is extended in the framework of feminist theory, initially researched by Laura Mulvey, where it deals with how men look at women, how women look at themselves and other women, and the effects surrounding this.

- What types of gazes are discussed and broken down? The male gaze, the imperial gaze, the oppositional gaze, the conventional gaze, the post-colonial gaze?
- Historical background of this term. Who are the important philosophers and thinkers that coined these terms? How did they each contribute?
- What important terms and definitions stand out? Write these words and terms down and define them in your own words.
- Write down 4 artworks highlighted in the videos that exemplify the theme of the gaze. Add title, artist name, media and purpose of the artwork.
- What connections can you make to this theme and your previous knowledge? Can you make connections to other artforms (film, writing, literature etc?)
- What questions or curiosities do you have? Like Uly, could you construct your own version of the gaze? Uly used the term "cybergaze" to explore internet surveillance.
