Inspiration page: Artists to Investigate
Inspiration page- You will create an inspiration page in your sketchbook, printing 4 images of paintings by at least 2 artists and ANNOTATING the selected artwork pointing out what EXACTLY you are drawn to about their style (imagery, composition, media technique, color scheme, use of contrast etc.) for your own work. Make sure to cite the sources where you pulled images and information .
This can also be a google doc you put in your Painting Folder. Make sure to make a new folder titled "Portrait Unit".

Idea Web on the unseen aspects of your subject
1 page in your sketchbook-5 unseen aspects of me (or the person who will be your subject in your final painting)
Think about cultural roots, layers of history, family, personality, memories, significant experiences etc.
You are doing this to list everything you know about this special person (yourself or someone else you know) to help you develop some ideas for what you could do to represent the invisible in a visible way.

Take a screenshot of your image and the color scheme (see below) used. What do you notice about the color scheme used in the painting?
1. List the formal element of art and principle of design that stands out immediately to you. Be as specific as possible.
2. Explain the COMPOSITION: Any specific structure you see here? Positive/Negative Space?
3. Choose 1 adjective to describe the MOOD in this piece and support with reasoning. Consider (if applicable): point of view, the gaze, color scheme, lighting, any significant details/symbols in background or foreground.
4. What intangible aspect is this artist aiming to express about themselves through this self-portrait? Come up with a claim and support with reasoning using art vocabulary.

composition sketches
You should sketch out at least 3 different compositional layouts thinking about the frame shape of your canvas. If you plan to use a rectangular canvas, your thumbnail composition sketches should be in a rectangular shape. Think about portrait layout or landscape layout of your canvas.
In your 3 composition sketches, you should explore the following:
-positive and negative space (space of subject/space of background)
-zooming in (get really close)
-focal point/emphasis (what is most important in your composition and how will you create this visually?)
-balance-symmetrical balance or asymmetrical balance
-position of subject (POV of viewer, eye contact)

Final idea
Your final idea should include:
VISUALS: -The final composition, in color (half an A4 page) Your compositional frame should correspond with your canvas frame. -Map out your color scheme (this may be inspired by your artist inspiration) or informed by the mood you want to exude. -Adobe Kuler site (to help you plan out your color scheme) |
WRITTEN: -What intangible aspects about your subject are you expressing in this portrait? What visual elements will you use to express this? -Who is your artist inspiration? (you can have more than 1) How has this artist's style inspired your project? What are you borrowing from them? -What media will you work in? What will your layout be (landscape, portrait, multiple small pieces or 1 large piece)? -What are your steps to manifest this idea? Write down your steps. Remember, FAT over LEAN! Oil paint over acrylic paint. |
